Using Physical Punishment
Physical punishment is not only ineffective, it is also harmful to your dog. It is abuse and can create fear or aggression in your dog. A reward-based training method is not only more respectful, but also more effective in building a trusting relationship with your pet. Reward good behavior rather than punishing bad behavior, and you will see much more positive results.
Not Providing Enough Exercise
Dogs, especially active breeds like hounds or herding dogs, need plenty of physical and mental exercise. Daily walks not only help them burn off energy, they also expose them to new smells and sensations that stimulate their brains. A dog that lacks exercise is likely to become bored and develop destructive behaviors, such as chewing on your furniture or clothing.
