Back home, I pondered the advisor’s insights. The mention of power of attorney was particularly troubling. Had my sibling taken steps to control more than just finances? The thought gnawed at me, a persistent worry that I couldn’t shake off.

I called Mom again, this time more determined to get to the bottom of things. “Mom, have you signed any documents recently?” I asked gently. Her response was vague, a jumble of half-remembered details and uncertainty.

“I don’t remember, dear. Your sibling usually handles those things,” she said. Her trust in them was evident, but it only fueled my resolve. I needed to act swiftly, to prevent any potential misuse of her trust.

As the days passed, I became more vigilant, scrutinizing every interaction, every piece of correspondence. I consulted with a lawyer, exploring the possibility of revising any existing authorizations.

The lawyer, a sharp-eyed woman with a no-nonsense attitude, advised caution. “You need to approach this delicately,” she warned. “Family dynamics can be tricky, and you don’t want to cause unnecessary rifts.”

Her words resonated with me. Despite my suspicions, I wanted to preserve the family bond, to find a resolution that didn’t tear us apart.
