In a statement made during a speaking event at Duke University in North Carolina, Cheney emphasized the gravity of her decision. “I don’t believe we have the luxury of writing in candidates’ names, particularly in swing states,” Cheney said. “As a conservative, as someone who believes in and cares about the Constitution, I have thought deeply about this, and because of the danger that Donald Trump poses, not only am I not voting for Donald Trump, but I will be voting for Kamala Harris.”
Minutes after Cheney’s announcement, the Trump campaign highlighted a past interview with Cheney on Fox News Channel, where she had criticized Harris. In the 2020 interview, Cheney labeled Harris as a “radical liberal,” claiming her Senate voting record was further to the left than Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren.
