Cheney’s decision marks a significant shift from her previous stance. The daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney, she was once a conservative leader in the GOP, rising in House Republican leadership ranks. However, her position changed dramatically after she became one of the most prominent Republicans to vote for Trump’s impeachment in early 2021. Cheney was among the ten House Republicans who voted to impeach Trump on charges related to the January 6 Capitol attack, a move that led to a fierce backlash from Trump and his supporters. She was subsequently ousted from her role as the number-three House GOP leader and lost her primary race in Wyoming to a Trump-backed candidate in 2022.
Cheney, who has been vocal about defending democratic processes and prioritizing the country over party allegiance, served on the House select committee investigating the January 6 attack. Despite earlier resistance to aligning with Democrats, Cheney has now endorsed Harris, contrasting sharply with other anti-Trump Republicans who have engaged more directly with the Biden campaign.
