25-Year-Old Noelia Ramos Fought Her Father in Court for Years to Make Her Own Decisions
The tragic legal battle of Noelia Ramos came to a heartbreaking end. Her story was not only about medical suffering, but also a deeply personal conflict between a daughter seeking autonomy and a father unwilling to let go.
Noelia Castillo Ramos, 25, from Barcelona, Spain, died by euthanasia on March 26, 2026. Her path to that decision was marked by years of trauma, legal disputes, and a divided family.
Her case sparked intense debate in Spain over who has the right to decide when life is no longer bearable.
A Troubled Beginning
Noelia had been under psychiatric care since the age of 13, around the time her parents separated. Over the years, she was diagnosed with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and borderline personality disorder (BPD), and spent periods in institutional care.
By 2022, she was living in a state-supervised center for vulnerable youth in Barcelona. During that time, she experienced a traumatic assault that deeply impacted her life.
She had also previously been a victim of sexual violence in other situations. The accumulation of these experiences left lasting emotional and psychological effects.
In October 2022, she attempted to end her life by jumping from a fifth-floor rooftop. She survived, but the fall left her paraplegic and in chronic pain.
Years of Suffering
In the days before her death, Noelia gave a final interview in which she spoke openly about her condition.
She described constant physical pain, difficulty sleeping, and a lack of desire to engage in daily life. She also expressed a long-standing feeling of loneliness and said she had no doubts about her decision.
Regarding her family’s opposition, she stated that while they would remain behind with their grief, she was the one who had endured years of suffering. Her wish was to find peace and relief from that pain.
She also emphasized that a parent’s emotional needs should not override the autonomy of an adult child.
Her Final Wishes
Noelia carefully planned the final moments of her life.
She chose four photographs to have with her, representing meaningful and happy memories: moments from her childhood, her early school years, and personal experiences she cherished.
She also expressed a desire to present herself with dignity, choosing to wear a dress she liked and simple makeup.
Although her family was allowed to say goodbye beforehand, she requested to be alone with her doctor at the moment of the procedure.
The Legal Battle
While her mother supported her decision despite personal disagreement, her father strongly opposed it.
He attempted to block the euthanasia process through legal action, arguing that her mental health conditions affected her ability to make a fully informed decision.
The case moved through multiple levels of the legal system, including European courts, but each ruling upheld Noelia’s right to decide.
Her father was not present at the time of her death…
