6-Month-Old Baby Passes Away in Tragic Incident as Parents Fight for Their Lives
On a quiet Thursday morning in Gates, New York, a young family’s routine drive was about to be shattered by something no parent could ever prepare for.
On March 5, 2026, Jake and Kelly Carpenter had their 6-month-old son, Noah Carpenter, secured in his car seat in the back of their white SUV when they came to a stop at the traffic light at Buffalo Road and Howard Road.
But soon after, life as they knew it would be over because of another driver’s actions.
The Carpenter family was following the rules of the road and waiting their turn to safely cross onto Howard.
But without warning, a black SUV came barreling into the intersection at high speed and slammed into the back of their vehicle.
The collision was so violent that both SUVs sustained heavy damage, a utility pole came crashing down onto the striking car, and everyone inside both vehicles was left trapped in the wreckage.
By the time police, fire, and ambulance crews arrived at the scene at approximately 10:15 a.m., the full scale of the devastation became clear.
Firefighters worked to free all four individuals from the damaged vehicles before paramedics rushed everyone to Strong Memorial Hospital.
But for one member of the Carpenter family, there was nothing more that could be done. Baby Noah had been carefully removed from his car seat by firefighters at the scene and rushed to the same clinic for treatment.
Sadly, he passed away from his injuries that morning.
His parents, meanwhile, continued fighting for their lives. Jake had suffered a serious injury to his aorta and required emergency surgery. Kelly’s situation was even more dire: she had sustained a severe traumatic brain injury and also underwent an urgent operation.
According to the family, Jake is expected to make a full recovery, but Kelly remains in critical condition. As of March 9, Jake had been upgraded to satisfactory condition, while Kelly remained in guarded condition at Strong Memorial.
A Family Held Up by Thousands
Word of the tragedy spread quickly, and the response from the community was overwhelming.
Just two days after the crash, a friend of the family launched a fundraiser to help the Carpenters through the unimaginable.
The fundraiser described the crash as a moment that left the family’s SUV with severe damage, and laid out exactly where every dollar would go:
“Giving sweet Noah a proper burial and funeral service, helping cover medical bills from this tragic accident, and assisting with any additional expenses the family faces during this incredibly difficult time.”
Within just 24 hours of launching, more than 1,500 people had donated over $110,000. By Monday afternoon, that number had already climbed past $140,000, eventually surpassing $169,000 raised toward a $200,000 goal, with nearly 2,400 donations and counting.
But the grief for what has been lost and the uncertainty regarding the health of Jake and Kelly has affected all those close to them.
Jake’s mother shared her grief, saying, “We are all totally devastated. […] My heart is broken beyond words.”
Family friends also organized gatherings to honor Kelly, Jake, and Noah, reflecting on the tragedy and raising their thoughts to the late baby. “We raised our glasses to remember sweet baby Noah that was taken way too soon,” they said.
The tragedy had brought the community closer together. “Life can change in a split second,” they reflected, urging others to never take people or moments for granted.
The Gates Police Department continues to investigate the fatal crash.
As Kelly fights to recover and Jake begins the long road ahead, the community’s love and prayers continue to pour in for a family that lost so much in a single moment.
Sadly, two young girls also died in a tragic accident that could have been prevented. On June 14, 2025, a devastating accident occurred in Delaware County, Pennsylvania, leaving two young girls critically injured.
After fighting for her life at Nemours Children’s Hospital, one of the girls, 12-year-old Abby Gillon, passed away two days later on June 16. A fundraiser was set up to support her bereaved family.
Initial reports confirmed that emergency crews were dispatched to the intersection of Lehr Boulevard and Concord Road, where they found two young girls suffering from life-threatening injuries after being struck by a vehicle while riding an electric scooter, from which they fell off.
Both were given immediate medical assistance at the scene before being rushed to a nearby hospital, where they were listed in critical condition.
The driver of the car involved remained at the scene and cooperated fully with authorities. While no criminal charges or citations were filed, the investigation remains ongoing.
Following the incident, Lehr Boulevard was temporarily shut down, but has since been reopened to traffic.
News concerning Abby’s death was shared by a loved one, who delivered the heartbreaking update on behalf of her grieving mother, Lori Kralle. “After fighting hard to combat a severe traumatic brain injury, Abigail passed away,” the friend divulged.
During a tearful interview, Lori recalled hearing the devastating news from an Emergency room nurse. “[I] just kept asking, ‘Is she alert? Is she responsive?’ And they wouldn’t give me an answer,” she said. “We feel broken. She was my best friend, my only daughter.”
Yet even amid the grief, Abby’s mother has found a way to channel her sorrow into purpose. Determined to prevent similar tragedies, Lori and her family have partnered with a state legislator to champion “Abby’s Law.” This proposed bill would implement stricter e-scooter regulations, including speed caps at 20 mph, helmet requirements for 16 and 17-year-olds, and an age restriction for riders.
Abby’s uncle has also advocated for the legislation, emphasizing the need for safety education, helmet use, and age restrictions to prevent similar accidents.
While her family continues to grieve, the loved ones of Abby’s friend, Bella Jones, are focused on her long and challenging road to recovery.
The severely injured girl’s cousin launched a fundraiser, writing, “She has a long road of recovery ahead of her, both parents will be out of work caring for Bella. Anything will help for the medical expenses.”
Bella is now out of critical condition and is on the rehabilitation floor. She suffered severe injuries, including staples in her head, a fractured skull, a broken jaw, fractured collarbone, broken femur, multiple fractured ribs, and a major concussion. She underwent surgery to wire her jaw and insert screws in her femur.
Joyce also shared that Bella will need six months or more to recover physically, adding, “Emotionally and mentally she’s never going to be the same.”
So far, the fundraiser has garnered substantial support, with donors sending love, prayers, and financial help as the family navigates an uncertain but hopeful path forward.
At this time, we extend our most heartfelt condolences to everyone affected by such significant losses.
