Are you constantly worried about your child’s safety? Do you think it’s important to establish some safety guidelines inside and outside the home? If you’re wondering how to do this, we have the answer for you. Keeping your child safe means constant adult supervision. It also means implementing some important changes and rules that ensure their well-being.
Create a family password.
A family password is a great security measure you can take to protect your children. It’s a word that no one knows, and you only share it with people you trust.
Make sure your child knows certain information
Make sure your child memorizes your full name, phone number, and address. Some 3-year-olds can remember their mom or dad’s cell phone number.
If your child is too young to memorize your information, write it on a piece of paper and hide it in a safe place, such as in their shoes or pocket. Remind your child where the paper is so they can tell an adult it’s there in case you get separated.
Don’t Talk to a Stranger
“Don’t talk to strangers” has been the rule for many parents for generations. It’s best to teach children when it’s appropriate to talk to strangers and when it’s not. When your children are with you, it’s fine to let them say hello and talk to new people. However, if they’re alone and are approached by a stranger, it’s a different story. Tell them that if a stranger approaches and offers them treats or toys, they should move away and leave the area.
Teach your child how to get out of scary or uncomfortable situations.
Some children are uncomfortable saying “No”—especially to older people or adults. Help them find excuses to get out of these uncomfortable situations.
