Sundowning syndrome is a phenomenon that mainly affects older people, especially those with dementia or Alzheimer’s. Although it is not a disease in itself, it is a set of symptoms that occur at a certain time of day and can affect both the patient and their caregivers.
Understanding this syndrome is key to its effective management and improving the quality of life of those affected.
What is this syndrome?
Sundowning syndrome, also known as “sundowning,” refers to a series of cognitive and behavioral changes that typically occur in the late afternoon and evening. It is common in patients with neurodegenerative disorders, but can also occur in older adults without a prior diagnosis.
Symptoms include agitation, confusion, anxiety, aggressiveness, restlessness, and in some cases hallucinations or delusions.
