‘The View’ Co-Host Sunny Hostin Declares Chuck Schumer’s ‘Days Are Over’ After Government Shutdown Compromise (Page 1 ) | November 15, 2025

“The View” co-host Sunny Hostin openly criticized Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer on Monday, declaring that his “days are over” following a key procedural vote that saw several Democrats break ranks to support reopening the federal government.

During Sunday’s vote, eight Senate Democrats sided with Republicans in approving a continuing resolution that would fund the government through January 30, effectively ending what had become the longest shutdown in U.S. history.

Hostin argued that Schumer’s inability to maintain party unity in negotiations with President Donald Trump and Republican lawmakers demonstrated a failure of leadership.

“I think Chuck Schumer — his days are over,” Hostin said on the show. “If he cannot keep his caucus together, if he cannot keep his caucus together, he needs to go. He needs to be replaced.”

Her comments reflect growing frustration among Democrats who believe Schumer has struggled to present a cohesive opposition strategy amid ongoing fiscal battles with the GOP and the White House.

Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance have repeatedly claimed that Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer supported the government shutdown out of fear of a primary challenge from Democratic New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

Cortez, however, declined to comment on whether she had threatened to run against Schumer during interviews with MSNBC’s Chris Hayes and a CNN town hall with Kaitlan Collins.

Hostin also criticized Democrats for what she described as a failure to stand firm, arguing that by voting to reopen the government and agreeing to schedule a vote on Obamacare subsidy extensions in December, they “let down the American people.” Democrats had initially shut down the government on October 1 because the continuing resolution did not include these provisions, which are set to expire on December 31.

“Shame on the Democrats for even believing that the Republicans will even vote on it. There’s no guarantee in this new deal that there’s going to be a vote. There’s no even commitment to have a vote. So the bottom line is the Democrats went into this after a blue wave out of the American people saying, we do want the opposition. The working people want the Democratic Party to fight for them. And now they just caved and surrendered,” Hostin said.

Among the eight Democrats who backed the continuing resolution were Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire, who is retiring in January 2027, and Sen. Tim Kaine of Virginia, who is not up for reelection in 2026 and expressed support for reopening the government just days after his party’s decisive win in the Virginia elections.

Republican Oklahoma Sen. Markwayne Mullin alleged on Tuesday that Schumer privately urged his party to keep the government closed until after Election Day, believing the shutdown would benefit Democratic electoral prospects.
