Heroic Intervention: Dawson County Officer Saved by Armed Bystander
DAWSON COUNTY, Ga.—A routine act of kindness turned dangerous when Sergeant Randy Harkness, a Dawson County police officer, was attacked after attempting to assist a homeless man. Harkness had offered the man a ride and money for food when the situation quickly escalated.
According to authorities, the homeless man suddenly became violent, assaulting the officer. A bystander, who was legally carrying a firearm, witnessed the attack and acted decisively. The woman fired two shots, halting the assailant and preventing further harm to Sergeant Harkness.
Sheriff Eddie Johnson praised the bystander’s actions, calling her a “hero” and stating that her intervention likely saved the officer’s life.
The incident is currently under investigation, though officials say the woman is not expected to face any charges related to the shooting. Authorities continue to gather details surrounding the attack and the circumstances leading up to it.
