Skin irritation and rashes are considered an unfortunate but common side effect of using conventional detergents. However, a study conducted by the University of Washington found that many of the best-selling laundry detergents are full of toxic compounds.
Anne Steinemann, one of the professors who worked on the study, said she was surprised by the extent of toxicity she found in detergents.
“I was surprised by the number and potential toxicity of the chemicals that were found,” said Anne Steinemann. “Nearly 100 volatile organic compounds were emitted from these six products, and none were listed on the product label. In addition, five of the six products emit one or more hazardous air pollutants and carcinogens. The Environmental Protection Agency considers that no amount of exposure to these pollutants, even at minimal levels, is safe.”
These disturbing results have led many people to search for a more natural solution for clean clothes. Of the many solutions identified, the number one natural solution appears to be white vinegar. This natural product offers greater cleaning power than commercial detergents and poses no toxicity risks.
