Clean and dry
Scrub the potatoes under running water to remove any dirt. Pat them dry thoroughly.
Pierce the potatoes
Use a fork to poke multiple holes all over each potato. This allows steam to escape and prevents them from bursting.
Oil and salt
Rub the potatoes with olive oil so they’re evenly coated, then sprinkle salt (and other seasonings, if using) over the skin. This enhances the crispiness and flavor.
Preheat the air fryer (optional)
Many models benefit from a 5-minute preheat at 400°F (200°C).
Some recipes say preheating is optional, but it can help with more consistent results.
Air fry
Place the potatoes in the fryer basket in a single layer (avoid overcrowding).
Cook at 400°F (200°C) for 35–45 minutes, flipping them halfway through the cooking time.
The exact time depends on potato size. A smaller potato might finish earlier, a larger one might need extra 5–10 minutes.
Check for doneness
Test by inserting a knife — it should slide in easily. Also, gently squeeze (with a mitt) — the potato should feel soft inside.
Serve
Slice open the top, fluff the insides with a fork, and top as desired: butter, sour cream, cheese, herbs, bacon, whatever you love.
