You get off the plane after a long flight, eager to reach your destination, but lo and behold… the conveyor belt is turning, the suitcases are coming one after the other, and yours still seems to be missing. Why do some passengers get their luggage almost immediately while others have to wait a long time?
Baggage handlers and airport agents know the inside scoop on the baggage claim process and reveal some simple tips to reduce your wait time.
Tip #1: Check your baggage last (but not late)
The problem :
The earlier luggage is loaded into the hold, the more likely it is to be buried under a pile of other suitcases and therefore unloaded last.
The solution:
If you check in your suitcase towards the end of the check-in period, it will be loaded last… and therefore unloaded among the first upon arrival!
Arrive at the airport on time, but wait before dropping off your luggage.
Be careful not to exceed the check-in deadline, or your suitcase will be sent on another flight!
Tip #2: Ask for a “Fragile” label
The problem :
Some luggage is more abused than others and often ends up at the bottom of the pile.
The solution:
A “Fragile” label encourages staff to handle your bag with care. It will usually be placed on top of the others, increasing the chances that it will be unloaded first.
Politely ask for a “Fragile” tag at the check-in counter.
Even if your bag isn’t fragile, this little trick can save you time.
Tip #3: Choose direct flights
The problem :
During stopovers, your luggage passes through several hands, increasing the risk of delays or misdirection.
The solution:
A direct flight considerably limits the risks of delay or loss of baggage.
If a stopover is necessary, choose a sufficient layover time to avoid rushed transfers.
Tip #4: Exit the plane quickly
