A disturbing new threat has emerged against federal law enforcement officers. According to an internal Customs and Border Protection (CBP) memo obtained by The Hill, the notorious Latin Kings street gang has allegedly issued a “shoot on sight” directive aimed at Border Patrol agents and other federal personnel involved in Operation Midway Blitz, a major ongoing enforcement initiative.
“Officers and agents are reminded to maintain heightened situational awareness and exercise extreme caution when conducting enforcement activities,” the memo warned, underscoring the seriousness of the threat.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) confirmed that the alert has prompted enhanced security measures for personnel operating in affected areas. A DHS spokesperson emphasized the growing dangers facing federal law enforcement officers, noting an alarming spike in direct threats.
“Our law enforcement is now facing an 8,000 percent increase in death threats against them while they risk their lives every single day to remove the worst of the worst,” the DHS representative stated.
The warning highlights the escalating risks faced by officers on the front lines as they confront violent criminal networks operating across state and national borders — and underscores the volatile environment in which federal agents continue to carry out their duties.
“Nearly every day, our officers in Chicago have faced violence, assaults, and targeted attacks — including just yesterday, when agents’ vehicles were rammed multiple times and shots were fired at them,” the representative said.
“These are men and women who wake up every morning simply to enforce the rule of law,” DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin told Fox News. “It’s deeply troubling that the Democratic Party has chosen to turn a blind eye, effectively normalizing violence against law enforcement officers.”
The alert follows the arrest of an illegal immigrant suspected of firing shots at Border Patrol agents on Saturday.
“This individual should have never been walking the streets of Chicago,” said Customs and Border Protection Chief Patrol Agent Greg Bovino in an interview with Fox News. “He should not have been in this country, and the fact that he reoffended while in possession of a firearm is deeply concerning to us in law enforcement.”
Just last month, a Latin Kings leader was taken into custody in connection with a bounty placed on Bovino’s head. Gang leader Juan Espinoza Martinez allegedly ordered a “hit” on the Border Patrol chief just three days before his October 6 arrest, according to the Department of Homeland Security.
Investigators cited a Snapchat exchange from a user identified as “Juan,” who appeared to offer a $2,000 reward for information “cuando lo agarren” (“when they catch him”) and a $10,000 payment “if you take him down.” A third message, reading “LK… on him,” reportedly confirmed the Latin Kings’ involvement.
“Depraved individuals like Juan Espinoza Martinez — who have no regard for human life and threaten law enforcement — have no place in this country,” said DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin. “We will not allow criminal gangs to put hits on U.S. government officials and our officers. Thanks to ICE and our federal partners, this thug is off the streets and behind bars. Secretary [Kristi] Noem has made it clear: anyone who threatens or harms law enforcement will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”
Martinez has been charged with one count of murder-for-hire, according to the Department of Justice. The federal complaint noted that messages about targeting the officer included an attached photo of the intended victim.
“Placing a bounty on the head of a federal officer is an attack on the rule of law and on every American who depends on law enforcement to keep them safe,” said Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche. “This is exactly what we mean when we say Take Back America — reclaiming every neighborhood and street corner from violent thugs and criminal gangs and returning them to law-abiding citizens. The Department of Justice will never allow violent networks to target those who protect our borders and communities.”
