Instructions
1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a baking pan or line it with parchment paper for easy removal.
2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves. Sift to evenly distribute the spices.
3. In another bowl, whisk together the applesauce, brown sugar, oil (or melted butter), eggs, and vanilla extract until smooth and well combined.
4. Gradually add the dry mixture to the wet ingredients, stirring gently until just combined. Avoid overmixing.
5. If using nuts or dried fruit, fold them into the batter at this stage.
6. Pour the batter evenly into the prepared baking pan, smoothing the top with a spatula.
7. Bake for 40-50 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
8. Allow the cake to cool in the pan for 10-15 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
9. Serve as is, or dust with powdered sugar, drizzle with glaze, or pair with whipped cream, apple butter, or vanilla ice cream for extra indulgence. Enjoy!
