First American Pope Criticized Trump & Vance In Tweets — Now Leading The Church

Off The Record: First American Pope Criticized Trump & Vance In Tweets — Now Leading The Church Although he’s American, the new pope seems to oppose Donald Trump’s tough immigration policies, based on what he’s posted on social media. Cardinal Robert Prevost, originally from Chicago, was elected on Thursday as the first American Pope, now leading the Catholic Church’s 1.41 billion members worldwide. Now known as Pope Leo XIV, he’s spoken out in the past against the Trump administration’s approach to immigration. One example is a retweet he made on April 14 about Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a 30-year-old undocumented father of three from Maryland who was deported to El Salvador during Trump’s term. The tweet he shared said,“Do you not see the suffering? Is your conscience not disturbed? How can you stay quiet?” Pope Leo XIV, now 69, has also posted articles criticizing the immigration views of Catholic politician JD Vance. One article he shared was titled:“JD Vance is wrong: Jesus doesn’t ask us to rank our love for others.” He also supported DACA recipients—immigrants brought to the U.S. as children—by sharing a statement from 2017 standing up for their rights. Pope Leo XIV, formerly Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, has made history as the first American-born Pope. Though born in the U.S., he spent most of his religious life in Peru—eventually becoming a citizen—and served as archbishop of Chiclayo. His deep Latin American roots and alignment with Pope Francis’s reforms made him a popular choice among Latin and North American cardinals.

Donald Trump just let world’s most notorious drug lord’s family into the United States

Seventeen family members of a well-known Mexican gang leader have reportedly been allowed to cross into the U.S. this week. The controversial decision is said to be part of a new agreement between President Trump and the notorious Sinaloa Cartel — more specifically, with the son of Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, the cartel’s former leader. The Sinaloa Cartel, also referred to as the Guzmán-Loera Organization, is a massive criminal network involved in drug trafficking and money laundering, and is considered a terrorist group by some. El Chapo led the cartel for years and is believed to be responsible for more than 34,000 deaths. Federal agencies once labeled him the most powerful drug trafficker in the world. El Chapo is a former leader of the criminal gang (YURI CORTEZ/AFP via Getty Images) After numerous arrests and daring prison escapes, El Chapo was finally captured in 2017 and later extradited to the United States. In 2019, he was convicted on multiple serious charges linked to the Sinaloa Cartel and sentenced to life in prison. Since then, he has been held under tight security at ADX Florence, a high-security facility in Colorado. However, a surprising twist has emerged in the case. On Wednesday (May 14), independent journalist Luis Chaparro revealed that Ovidio Guzmán López — El Chapo’s son — had previously been offered a deal that benefited both sides. Ovidio, 35, also known as ‘the Mouse,’ took over cartel operations after his father’s imprisonment. He was extradited to the U.S. in 2023. Following the agreement, members of López’s family were permitted to enter the U.S. This included El Chapo’s ex-wife, Griselda López Pérez, who reportedly arrived this week. Just hours later, Mexican Security Secretary Omar García Harfuch confirmed the report.
