Authorities Provide Update on UA Student Missing During Spring Break in Spain

James “Jimmy” Gracey, a 20-year-old University of Alabama student, disappeared while on a spring break trip in Barcelona, Spain, drawing international attention and concern.

Originally from Elmhurst, Illinois, Gracey was last seen around 3:00 a.m. on March 17 near Shôko nightclub in the Port Olímpic area. He had been out with friends earlier that night but became separated from them shortly before his disappearance.

Security footage captured him outside the nightclub, including at least one video showing him walking with an unidentified person. He was reportedly wearing a white T-shirt, dark pants, and a gold chain with a rhinestone cross.

Gracey had been staying at an Airbnb on Ronda de Sant Pere, several kilometers from the club, but never returned. When he failed to respond to messages later that morning, concern quickly grew among family and friends.

His mother shared an urgent message online asking for help, while Spanish authorities, including the Mossos d’Esquadra, launched an investigation. Officers reviewed CCTV footage, interviewed witnesses, and retraced his movements.

Search efforts focused on nearby streets, public areas, and the waterfront. During the investigation, a wallet believed to belong to Gracey was found floating in the water, raising concerns that he may have entered the sea.

Maritime and aerial search teams were deployed, scanning coastal areas, nearby beaches, and the Mediterranean waters. Authorities also recovered his phone, though it was initially unclear what information it provided or how it was found.

Reports later indicated the phone may have been linked to an arrest, though officials did not confirm whether that arrest was directly connected to Gracey’s disappearance.

Investigators continued analyzing surveillance footage and mapping possible routes he could have taken after leaving the nightclub, considering whether he may have become disoriented or incapacitated.

Friends, classmates, and fraternity members helped spread awareness, describing Gracey as responsible, kind, and deeply involved in his community. His disappearance was considered out of character.

U.S. officials and the University of Alabama assisted the family, while search efforts intensified over several days with dive teams examining areas near where he was last seen.

On March 19, authorities confirmed that a body had been found in the water off Barcelona near the Port Olímpic area. Based on location and circumstances, it was believed to be Gracey.

Dive teams recovered the body from the Mediterranean Sea near the same area where his belongings had been discovered. Authorities later identified it as James Gracey, ending the missing person search.

His family was notified and released a statement expressing their heartbreak, describing him as a beloved son, brother, and friend.

Investigators stated that, based on initial findings, foul play had been ruled out. The case shifted toward determining the exact circumstances of how he entered the water.

Friends, family, and the university community shared tributes, remembering his kindness, leadership, and positive impact on those around him.

Memorials were planned both in his hometown and at the University of Alabama, as the community came together to honor his life.

While the search has concluded, authorities continue reviewing evidence to better understand the events leading up to his death.

The tragedy has also served as a reminder of the importance of safety and awareness while traveling, particularly in unfamiliar environments.

James “Jimmy” Gracey’s story, marked by youth and promise, has left a lasting impact, highlighting both the fragility of life and the importance of community support in times of loss.
