Authorities Provide Update on UA Student Missing During Spring Break in Spain
James “Jimmy” Gracey, a 20-year-old University of Alabama student, disappeared while on a spring break trip in Barcelona, Spain, drawing international attention and concern.
Originally from Elmhurst, Illinois, Gracey was last seen around 3:00 a.m. on March 17 near Shôko nightclub in the Port Olímpic area. He had been out with friends earlier that night but became separated from them shortly before his disappearance.
Security footage captured him outside the nightclub, including at least one video showing him walking with an unidentified person. He was reportedly wearing a white T-shirt, dark pants, and a gold chain with a rhinestone cross.
Gracey had been staying at an Airbnb on Ronda de Sant Pere, several kilometers from the club, but never returned. When he failed to respond to messages later that morning, concern quickly grew among family and friends.
His mother shared an urgent message online asking for help, while Spanish authorities, including the Mossos d’Esquadra, launched an investigation. Officers reviewed CCTV footage, interviewed witnesses, and retraced his movements.

Dive teams recovered the body from the Mediterranean Sea near the same area where his belongings had been discovered. Authorities later identified it as James Gracey, ending the missing person search.
His family was notified and released a statement expressing their heartbreak, describing him as a beloved son, brother, and friend.
Investigators stated that, based on initial findings, foul play had been ruled out. The case shifted toward determining the exact circumstances of how he entered the water.
