Directions:
1. Prepare the Batter:
In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, cornmeal, baking powder, salt, sugar, and black pepper.
Gradually add the milk and water to the dry ingredients, stirring until a thick batter forms. The batter should be just thick enough to coat the onions and hold together when dropped into the oil.
2. Add the Onions:
Fold the finely chopped onions into the batter, ensuring that all the onion pieces are well coated.
3. Heat the Oil:
In a deep skillet or frying pan, heat about 1/2 inch of oil over medium-high heat. The oil should be hot enough that a small drop of batter sizzles immediately when added.
4. Fry the Patties:
Drop spoonfuls of the onion batter into the hot oil, flattening each spoonful slightly with the back of a spoon to form small patties.
Fry the patties for 2-3 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and crispy. Be sure to flip them carefully to ensure even cooking.
5. Drain and Serve:
Remove the patties from the oil and place them on a plate lined with paper towels to drain any excess oil.
Serve:
Serve the onion patties hot as a side dish, appetizer, or snack. They pair well with dipping sauces like ranch, sour cream, or spicy ketchup.
