Ingredients

For the Cake:

  • 2 cups + 2 tablespoons sifted all-purpose flour (plus extra for dusting)
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 2 sticks unsalted butter (1 cup)
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

For the Caramel Icing:

  • 3 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 stick unsalted butter (1/2 cup)
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • A pinch of salt
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
