Ingredients

For the Apple Filling:

  • 6 to 8 medium apples (Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or a mix), peeled, cored, and sliced
  • ¾ cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

For the Crisp Topping:

  • 1 cup old-fashioned oats
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ½ cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, cold and cut into cubes

Instructions

  1. Preheat the Oven
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a deep 9×9-inch baking dish or a deep pie dish.
  2. Prepare the Apple Filling
In a large bowl, toss the sliced apples with sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, lemon juice, and vanilla extract. Mix until all apple slices are evenly coated, then pour the mixture into your prepared baking dish.
  3. Make the Topping
In another bowl, combine oats, flour, brown sugar, salt, and cinnamon. Cut in the cold butter using a pastry cutter or your fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. Assemble the Crisp
Evenly sprinkle the oat mixture over the apples, covering them completely.
  5. Bake to Perfection
Bake for 45–50 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apple filling is bubbling up around the edges.
  6. Cool and Serve
Let the crisp rest for about 10 minutes before serving. Spoon it warm into bowls and top with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream for the ultimate comfort dessert.

Tips for the Best Deep Dish Apple Crisp

  • Choose the right apples: A mix of tart and sweet varieties gives the best flavor and texture.
  • Don’t skimp on the topping: The “deep dish” style means extra crumble — the best part!
  • Make ahead: This crisp reheats beautifully; simply warm in the oven at 300°F (150°C) before serving.
