Parental influence, even unconscious
While many teenagers seek to oppose their parents’ recommendations, these often end up marking their life choices. As Ericka Rascon-Ramirez explains:
“In many cases, we have managed to do what we thought was most convenient for us, even if it went against our parents’ wishes. But no matter how much we tried to avoid our parents’ recommendations, it is likely that they ended up influencing, in subtle ways, choices that we thought were extremely personal.”
In other words, even when we believe we are acting independently, the influence of our parents continues to weigh on our decisions, sometimes unconsciously.
A belated but valuable recognition
During childhood and adolescence, a demanding mother can be perceived as strict, even authoritarian. However, with hindsight, many adults realize the importance of this requirement and appreciate the beneficial effects it has on their journey. They recognize their parents’ efforts and, very often, reproduce the same educational approach with their own children.
And you, was your mother demanding when you were a child? Do you think that had an impact on your success?
