hoosing the Right Crate
The first step in crate gardening is selecting a suitable container. Wooden crates, plastic bins, or even repurposed boxes work well, provided they are sturdy and capable of holding soil and plants. Wooden crates are ideal because they offer natural breathability and a rustic aesthetic that complements any outdoor or indoor space. Ensure the crate has drainage holes, or drill several yourself, to prevent water from accumulating and causing root rot. The crate should be at least 15–20 cm (6–8 inches) deep to accommodate the mint’s spreading root system.
Preparing the Crate for Planting
Proper preparation ensures healthy growth. Start by cleaning the crate thoroughly, especially if it has been used for other purposes. Place a layer of gravel or small stones at the bottom to improve drainage. Fill the crate with a well-draining potting mix rich in organic matter. Mint thrives in soil that retains moisture without becoming waterlogged. Avoid heavy garden soil, as it can compact and inhibit root development.
