Eco-Gardening Mint in Repurposed Crates
Selecting Mint Varieties
There are many types of mint, each offering distinct flavors and aromas. Common varieties include spearmint, peppermint, chocolate mint, and apple mint. Spearmint is ideal for cooking and beverages, while peppermint is known for its strong flavor and fragrance. Choose a variety that suits your culinary preferences and the space available. For beginners, spearmint or peppermint are easy to grow and maintain.
Planting Mint
Mint spreads vigorously, so it’s essential to plant it with care to avoid overcrowding. You can start with seedlings or cuttings. Plant them about 20–25 cm apart to allow for proper growth. Cover the roots with soil and gently press down to secure the plant. Water lightly after planting to help the mint establish itself. Mint is a hardy herb and typically grows quickly, producing lush green foliage within a few weeks.
Positioning the Crate Garden
Mint prefers partial to full sunlight, thriving with 4–6 hours of direct light per day. Place your crate in a location that receives morning sunlight or bright, indirect light. On balconies or patios, ensure the crate is positioned where air circulates freely to reduce the risk of fungal diseases. If sunlight is limited indoors, consider using grow lights to supplement light exposure and encourage healthy growth.
