He arrived a few minutes early, a rare occurrence that underscored the seriousness of the situation. We sat opposite each other at the kitchen table, the folder between us like a barrier. “So, what did Reynolds say?” he asked, his eyes fixed on the folder.

I took a deep breath, choosing my words carefully. “She said… she said the results are conclusive. It’s not what we expected.” I watched as his expression shifted, the practiced calm giving way to something more vulnerable. “What does this mean?” he asked, his voice barely above a whisper.

“It means we need to make some decisions,” I replied, meeting his gaze. “We can’t ignore this.” He nodded, the weight of my words settling over him like a heavy cloak. We sat in silence, the enormity of the situation pressing down on us.

After a long pause, he spoke again. “I never thought it would come to this,” he admitted, his voice tinged with regret. “Neither did I,” I replied, my own voice softening. “But we have to face it, whatever it is.”
