Directions:
1. Prepare the French Onion Soup Topping:
In a large skillet, heat olive oil and butter over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and cook for 25-30 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the onions are golden brown and caramelized.
Stir in the brown sugar and balsamic vinegar, cooking for an additional 2-3 minutes.
Add the garlic and cook for 1 minute until fragrant.
Pour in the beef broth and stir in the dried thyme. Simmer for 10-15 minutes, allowing the broth to reduce and the flavors to meld together. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Remove from heat and set aside.
2. Cook the Burgers:
Season the ground beef with salt and pepper. Form the beef into 4 equal-sized patties.
Heat a skillet or grill over medium-high heat and cook the patties for about 4-5 minutes per side, or until cooked to your desired doneness.
During the last minute of cooking, place a slice of Swiss cheese on each burger and cover to melt.
3. Assemble the Burgers:
Place the cooked burgers on the toasted buns.
Spoon a generous amount of the French onion soup topping over each burger, ensuring some of the caramelized onions and broth go on top.
Garnish with fresh thyme if desired.
4. Serve:
Serve these French Onion Soup Burgers with crispy fries or a side salad for a complete, comforting meal.
