For the Caramelized Onion Sauce
1 large yellow onion, thinly sliced
1 tablespoon olive oil or butter
½ teaspoon sugar (to help caramelize the onions)
1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
1 cup beef broth (low-sodium preferred)
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
Salt and pepper, to taste
Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Hamburger Steaks
In a medium bowl, gently mix together the ground beef, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper.
Avoid overmixing — it keeps your patties tender and juicy.
Step 2: Shape the Patties
Divide the mixture into 4 equal portions and form into oval or round patties, about ¾ inch thick.
Press a small indentation into the center of each patty to prevent puffing during cooking.
Step 3: Cook the Steaks
Heat 1 tablespoon olive oil in a skillet over medium-high heat.
Add the patties and cook for 4–5 minutes per side, until browned and cooked through.
Transfer to a plate and cover loosely with foil to keep warm.
Step 4: Caramelize the Onions
In the same skillet, reduce heat to medium. Add olive oil or butter, then the thinly sliced onions and sugar.
Cook, stirring occasionally, for 15–20 minutes until onions turn golden and soft.
If they start sticking, add a splash of water or broth to loosen them up.
Step 5: Make the Sauce
Sprinkle the flour over the onions and stir for 1 minute to remove any raw taste.
Slowly pour in the beef broth, whisking constantly to avoid lumps.
Add Worcestershire sauce and simmer for 3–5 minutes until thickened and glossy
Step 6: Combine and Serve
Return the hamburger steaks to the skillet, spooning sauce over the top.
Simmer for 1–2 minutes until heated through and coated in that luscious onion gravy.
Serve immediately with mashed potatoes, rice, or buttered noodles to soak up every drop of that incredible sauce.
