He Brought Lawyers—She Brought Records

The rest of the day passed in a haze of anxiety and phone calls. I spent hours combing through departmental records, trying to piece together exactly where the inconsistencies lay. The office around me buzzed with the usual rhythm of activity, oblivious to the crisis unfolding in my corner. I pulled up emails, cross-referenced them with meeting notes, and even called in a few favors from colleagues in accounting to get a clearer picture.

Every lead I pursued seemed to end in ambiguity—a missed signature here, a misfiled document there. It was as if someone had gone to great lengths to obscure the truth. By late afternoon, I was no closer to an explanation, and the pressure of the impending audit loomed larger.

“You look like you haven’t slept in days,” said Sarah, my assistant, as she brought me a much-needed cup of coffee. Her concern was genuine, and for a moment, I let myself lean into it. “I appreciate this,” I said, taking a sip. “It’s just been… one of those days.”

“Anything I can help with?” she offered, her eyes bright with sincerity. I hesitated, weighing the burden of involving someone else in this tangled mess. But Sarah was sharp, and more importantly, she was someone I could trust.

“Actually, yes,” I relented. “Could you pull the records for Project Delta? I need everything from the last two years.” It was a shot in the dark, but at this point, I was desperate for any lead.

As she walked away, I returned to the task at hand, determined to find the thread that would unravel this knot. My phone buzzed—a new email from Mr. Larkin. The subject line read: “Urgent: Meeting Confirmation.” My heart skipped a beat as I opened it, scanning the details. The meeting was set for Friday at 3 PM, a mere two days away. Time was running out.

I leaned back in my chair, the weight of the situation pressing down on me. If I didn’t find answers soon, the consequences could be devastating—not just for me, but for everyone in my department.
