Let’s start by recognizing the signs of a toxic person:
They are judgmental: Constructive criticism is healthy, but persistent and unwarranted criticism can damage self-esteem.
They thrive on drama: They spend their time sharing the most vulnerable moments of someone who trusted them with the rest of the family.
They only talk to you when they need you. Often, they turn to you for advice or emotional comfort. But once you turn to them for help, they reject you.
They may lash out, yell, and call you names. They may have positive interactions, but they are short-lived as they quickly revert to their typical manipulative behavior.
If your family member claims they never said something, when you and everyone else know it’s not true, this is a form of manipulation, which is highly abusive behavior.
Toxic relationships, even with family members, can leave you emotionally drained, which can impact your overall mental well-being. However, you shouldn’t accept the status quo.
