It turned out that Oksana was expecting quintuplets. This is an extremely rare occurrence, with only 1 in 47,458,321 pregnancies resulting in quintuplets.
While Oksana was still processing the news, the doctor, visibly excited, ran around the hospital. “Nobody at the hospital had ever seen anything like it,” Oksana says.
For Oksana and Sergey, however, the news was overwhelming. “It almost felt like a nightmare, as though I would wake up at any moment,” Oksana remembers. The couple was forced to rethink their plans for the future and worry about how they would manage caring for so many children. “It takes time to process this kind of news. How would we manage to take care of so many children?” reflects Sergey.
In her 30th week of pregnancy, Oksana went to the hospital to prepare for the birth. When she reached the delivery room, eight doctors were waiting for her, treating her with extreme caution. “They treated me like I was made of porcelain,” Oksana says.
