Give Your Blueberry Bushes Enough Space
Separate the bushes by 2-2.5 feet or allow 6 feet of space for one bush. If planting the bushes in rows, separate them by 8-10 feet.
Planting Process
Spring and fall are the best planting seasons. However, in some regions of the world, blueberries can be planted any time of year.
If using young bushes, carefully remove the bush. Then, roughen the bark over the berry root.
Add about half an inch more planting soil than the topsoil. Tamp the soil around the root ball and add the rest of the soil. Water your young plant well.
Mulching
When it comes to mulching, sawdust, bark, grass clippings, and acidic sawdust work best. Blueberry bushes have shallow roots, which means mulching is highly recommended.
Add about 2-4 inches of mulch to retain moisture, prevent weed growth, and provide organic matter. Repeat this process annually, and remember to never use cedar or redwood sawdust.
Pruning
This will strengthen your bush and provide larger fruit. As your bush begins to grow, prune it regularly to make sure it is strong enough to bear fruit.
Cut off any flowers that appear. Regular pruning will keep your plant strong and healthy.
Tips for proper trimming:
Remove any growth from the lower part of the berry bush.
Trim away dead branches
. Cut off short and discolored branches.
Trim off about half the wood.
Fertilizing.
Always use organic fertilizers. Bone meal and cottonseed work best. Manure can damage your bushes, so try to avoid it.
