Then, out of the blue, I received a call two weeks before the wedding, which would further complicate things. Jen was there; I had little contact with her due to my strained connection with Shelly, her daughter. Her voice sounded anxious and rushed, and it put me on edge right away.

Afterwards, she revealed something unexpected to me. The weight of her hastily said words took some time for me to grasp. Her bold and abrupt statement, “We need to cancel the wedding,” briefly halted me in my tracks. It became clear to me that Shelly had lied throughout. I can’t stand by while your son’s life is ruined like this.
