I forwarded the email to Tom, who responded almost immediately, “Can you believe this?” he wrote. “She’s really serious about this.” I nodded to myself, knowing we needed to address it directly. It was time to involve more than just the two of us.

Later that week, we arranged a family meeting over Zoom. My parents joined, their expressions a mix of confusion and concern. “What’s this all about?” my father asked, as I explained the situation.

Sarah was visibly uncomfortable, her eyes shifting away from the camera. “I just thought it might be a good idea,” she mumbled, her earlier confidence gone. My mother interjected, “But why would you think that’s okay, Sarah? He’s not a test subject.”

The conversation was tense, each of us trying to navigate the delicate balance between support and disapproval. I could see Sarah struggling, her defenses crumbling under the weight of our collective scrutiny.

“I just… I want to be a part of his life,” she finally admitted, her voice tinged with desperation. “I don’t want to lose our connection.”

My heart ached for her, understanding the fear of losing family ties. But this wasn’t the right way to mend them. “You won’t lose him,” I assured her. “But we have to find another way, one that respects all of us.”

After the meeting, I felt a sense of relief mixed with uncertainty. We had opened the door to conversation, but the path forward was still unclear. It was a fragile truce, one that required careful nurturing.
