Large volumes: several possible causes
If you pee frequently at night (more than a third of your total 24-hour urine), there could be several explanations. “If the volumes are significant throughout the day, reaching 2 liters or more in total, it could simply be that you are drinking too much,” warns Professor Desgrandchamps.
The right thing to do: in this case, and only in this case (no reason to be thirsty during a heatwave!), reduce the amount of water you drink. “A second possible cause is sleep apnea,” he adds. “This condition causes the kidneys to secrete a hormone at night that stimulates them to work harder – and thus eliminate the water consumed during the day.”
The best course of action: contact your doctor, who will take appropriate action.
Another possible cause: a form of heart failure. The heart struggles to pump blood back up to the legs, resulting in a feeling of heaviness in the legs during the day… “In this case, at night, when you lie down, the blood flows back up more easily, and the kidneys can do their filtering work, which they couldn’t do during the day – and as a result, you get up to urinate!” explains Professor Desgrandchamps.
The best course of action: A simple solution is to take 20 to 40 minutes at the end of the day to lie down with your feet elevated, or even propped up against the wall. And you can urinate before you go to bed!
Finally, if your doctor has prescribed diuretics, remember to take them in the morning, and in any case never after 6 pm.
