A Unique Appearance and Adaptations
The Mourning Cloak butterfly (Nymphalis antiopa) typically lives up to one year, a remarkable lifespan for a butterfly. Its name comes from the velvety dark wings that resemble a traditional cloak worn by those in mourning. Adding a pop of color, a row of iridescent blue spots lines the inner edge of the wings, which are bordered by a bright yellow band around the outer edges. When the wings are folded, the butterfly’s appearance changes dramatically, resembling a charred piece of bark with a dull white band on the underside. This clever camouflage helps it avoid predators.
These butterflies belong to the brush-footed family (Nymphalidae), which are distinguished by their reduced first pair of legs. These legs are often covered with hairs, giving them a brush-like appearance and inspiring the name.
