The typical human nail has a small white half-moon shape at the base, where it connects to the finger and the cuticle. Although some people are born without the ability to perceive the half-moon, or lunula, on their nails, the absence of this nail art feature may indicate a vitamin deficiency or other major health problem.
The matrix is a space under the skin where nails grow. Generate additional cells using the matrix. Then the cells clump together and push out of the skin. A white half-moon at the base of a nail, called a lunula, can indicate many different problems. This area of the nail appears white because the fifth layer of basal elastin is hidden under the blood cells.
The lunula often covers a quarter of the nail and is particularly visible on the thumb. Additionally, experts say that a whiter lunula indicates a healthy person. Several variables, including diet, fitness, and environmental influences, can influence the growth of the lunula. The lunula may change in size, become less visible, or disappear completely if any of the above-mentioned problems are present.
