Sleeping environment: Noise or disturbances in the bedroom are unlikely to promote restful sleep. Maybe you need darker insulation or curtains to reduce noise or light pollution, or maybe you need to find a way to silence your neighbor’s dog! If you take the time to make your sleeping area comfortable and relaxing, you can get a good night’s sleep – it’s worth it.
Other help: Your doctor may suggest a prescription medication to help with a temporary sleep problem. However, sleep information suggests that this should only be used as a short-term measure. There are over-the-counter herbal remedies that may be less addictive and gentler on your body: valerian and hops are a fairly powerful combination of herbs that help some people. Meditation and other relaxation methods have been shown to be very effective in reducing stress and promoting sleep. There are many books on the subject, or you can contact your health club to inquire about yoga classes. Light exercise, combined with relaxation, can be very beneficial.
