John Stamos Married ‘The Perfect Woman’ At Age 54, Showing Love Is Worth The Wait
John Stamos has been a household name since the early 1980s when he rose to fame in the role of Blackie Parrish on the TV series General Hospital. More television work eventually led him to his most iconic role as Uncle Jesse on Full House, which cemented his status as one of the heartthrobs of his time.
Over the decades, Stamos continued working in television and even reprised his role in the reboot Fuller House.
But beyond his acting career, Stamos has also had an interesting journey in love.
After dating and marrying model Rebecca Romijn in the mid-1990s, the couple eventually divorced after ten years of marriage. For several years afterward, Stamos wasn’t publicly linked to anyone romantically. During that time, he openly spoke about his desire to have children someday.
Although his Full House character Uncle Jesse was known for being carefree and a bit irresponsible, Stamos himself seemed eager to eventually settle down and build a family. He just hadn’t yet found the right partner.
That changed when he met model and actress Caitlin McHugh.
The two first crossed paths while working together, though their romance didn’t begin right away. Eventually, their relationship developed and became serious. After dating for about two years, Stamos proposed to McHugh in October 2017.
The proposal took place at Disneyland, McHugh’s favorite place. Stamos arranged for a video montage of romantic scenes from Disney and Pixar movies to play before the moment. The montage ended with Sebastian from The Little Mermaid saying the famous line: “Just ask the girl.”
Stamos then proposed, and McHugh said yes.
Their engagement came with another exciting announcement: the couple was expecting their first child together.
They were married on February 3, 2018, during a romantic ceremony at the Little Brown Church in Studio City, California. A celebration followed at Stamos’ home in Beverly Hills.
The day before the wedding had a small complication when thieves reportedly broke into McHugh’s hotel room and stole about $165,000 worth of jewelry. Despite that setback, the wedding itself went smoothly.
At the time, McHugh was 31 and Stamos was 54.
Just over two months later, on April 16, 2018, the couple welcomed their son, Billy Stamos, named after Stamos’ father.
Stamos shared the news on social media with a photo of himself holding his newborn son and wrote:
“From now on, the best part of me will always be my wife and my son. Welcome Billy Stamos (named after my father).”
Friends and former Full House co-stars had long joked that Stamos had a natural talent with children. Candace Cameron Bure, Andrea Barber and Jodie Sweetin even described him as the “baby whisperer” on set.
For Stamos, becoming a father had always been an important dream.
“I always wanted to have kids,” he once said in an interview. “I just had to meet the right person to do it with.”
The actor has also spoken openly about turning his life around before meeting McHugh. He said that after becoming sober and focusing on improving himself, he felt ready for a more meaningful relationship.
When McHugh came into his life, he immediately recognized that she was someone special.
Today, Stamos often shares glimpses of his family life with McHugh and their son, showing a different side of the actor who was once known for his bad-boy image on screen.
For him, the role he always wanted most turned out to be the one he waited longest for: being a husband and a father.
