A very real threat: burglaries never take a break
Every year, thousands of French homes are victims of burglaries. In the Île-de-France region alone, more than 300 break-ins are recorded every day. And yet, few people are aware of the simple steps that can seriously complicate the lives of intruders.
A British locksmith expert known as Brummie Lock Picker on social media regularly shares his tips on TikTok. One of them, as simple as it is effective, is going viral: leaving the key slightly turned in the lock overnight.
A simple, well-positioned key: an unsuspected barrier
In his demonstration, the expert shows that when a key is inserted into the lock and turned a few degrees, it blocks the internal mechanism. As a result, it becomes very difficult for a burglar to push it back with a tool or a second key from the outside.
Conversely, if the key is left in the neutral position , it can be easily pushed or moved remotely, making it easier to open the door.
Think of your lock like a music box: as long as the mechanism turns freely, all it takes is the right combination to open it. But if you jam the handle, you can’t play the tune… or, in this case, break the lock.
A tip to adopt… but not without thought
Obviously, this method isn’t foolproof. Some internet users wonder, “What if a burglar broke a window to get to the key?” Others point out that in the event of a break-in, accessing the key from the outside could pose a risk.
But other accounts counterbalance this debate. For example, one person recounts surviving a house fire thanks to a key already inserted and ready to turn. In an emergency, every second counts, and not having to search for keys can truly save lives.
