Maggots in the Trash Bin? Here’s How to Prevent Them!
Maggots thrive in warm and humid environments. As temperatures rise in the summer, we often see these wriggling creatures among the trash, particularly in organic waste bins. It’s an unpleasant sight and can cause a foul smell. With the tips below, you can prevent maggots and get rid of them if they appear.
Life Cycle of Maggots
Maggots are the larvae of flies. Flies lay their eggs in warm, moist environments, such as trash bins. Organic waste bins are especially appealing, as they contain food scraps. The larvae hatch from the eggs and feed on the abundance of waste, allowing them to quickly grow and develop into pupae. After just three days, the larvae transform into flies, which then lay eggs again. This rapid life cycle explains why maggots appear in large numbers in trash bins.
