A man discovered an old video cassette while digging in his mother-in-law’s garden. The cassette took him and his wife on a journey that allowed them to learn more about this woman.
Tom was furious. He had been working tirelessly for hours in his mother-in-law Rose’s garden. She had convinced him to build a small wall to plant her precious flowers in when he and his wife, Eve, visited.
Given the choice, Tom would have avoided meeting Rose. He didn’t think she liked him very much, although he had no idea what he had done to earn her anger.

Regardless, Rose had decided to punish him by putting him to work every time she laid eyes on him. So Tom had decided to avoid her as much as he could.
Only his wife could oppose this decision, which she often did when she needed to see her mother, who lived in the neighboring town, barely 30 minutes from their house.
He was digging a hole to drive posts into the ground for the wall when his tool hit something that made a dull thud. Curious, Tom widened the hole with his hands and was rewarded with an old box containing a video cassette.
Tom kept his discovery a secret from Rose and his wife. He didn’t want her to tell his mother, and something told him they should at least know what the cassette contained before Rose found out.

Convinced it was the best thing to do, Tom took the tape home with him when he and his wife left Rose’s house. On the way, he stopped at his friend Jim’s house. Jim was a retired television journalist who owned an electronics store, so Tom knew he would have something to help him view the videotape.
Tom borrowed an old VCR from Jim, which he was assured could be used to play the videotape he had found. When they got home, he told his wife what had happened.
“Why did you keep it, Tom? If you found it at her house, it must be hers,” Eve replied.
“Or it could have belonged to a family who lived in this house before Rose,” Tom argued. “Look, let’s look at it and see what’s in it.” »
Eve reluctantly agreed, but asked Tom to promise they would talk to Rose about it later. “Promise,” said Tom, a twinkle in his eye.

He quickly tuned the VCR and inserted the cassette. A young girl appeared on the screen; she was standing by an ocean, laughing uncontrollably while a young man placed a wreath on her head.
The tape showed them in Hawaii, and Eve immediately recognized the young woman as her mother. When the video ended, Tom faced his wife, his face full of questions.
“I’ve never seen your mother laugh like she did in that video, Eve,” he said. “Why?”
“I don’t know, Tom, I’m as shocked as you are.”
“Do you want to know?” asked Tom, his eyes anew.
“Of course!” exclaimed Eve. “I’d like to see her laugh like that again, even if it’s just once.”

The next day, they invited Rose to their home and played her the video. When the elderly woman saw it, she burst into tears and revealed why she had stopped laughing.
It turns out she had fallen in love with a man named Pete, who gave his life to save hers. “How did that happen?” Tom asked her.
“It’s a long story, but I’ll make it short because we don’t have our whole lives ahead of us,” she replied.
“Pete was the love of my life. A brave, dashing man with a heart so big he sometimes scared me. We met at university and remained friends for years before taking the next step in our relationship.
“When we got married, we moved into our house, where I still live.” Back then, the streets weren’t as safe as they are today, and I worked as a night nurse. Pete didn’t like it because he thought I was overworking myself, but he supported me in every way he could. He often drove me to pick me up every night, but one day the car broke down, and we had to take the bus.
“When we got off at the bus stop, we noticed a group of drunken men attacking a woman. Pete asked them to let her go, which they did, but they found themselves facing us. One of them tried to grope me, and Pete reacted violently.
“During the fight, he was stabbed by one of the men and died on the spot before I could even say goodbye and tell him I was pregnant with his baby.”
“The videotape is the only thing I have left of him, as I lost the baby two months later due to a miscarriage caused by stress and grief.”

Rose married Eve’s father a few years later, but she revealed that she only did it because she felt obligated to. Her husband’s name was Evan, and he was a jealous man who knew about her past.
He believed he would never live up to the late Pete and always gave Rose a hard time because of it. He ended up burning everything that reminded her of Pete, but she managed to save the tape by burying it.
