My Husband Was Mocking My Underwear in a Group Chat with His Friends – He Soon Regretted It
by Dan
Tom and I had been pinching pennies lately because he was obsessed with buying a fancy sports car. I’d put off buying anything nice for myself—no new makeup, no clothes, not even new underwear.
Two days ago, while cleaning up, I moved Tom’s phone to charge it. Just then, the screen lit up with a notification. A photo appeared.
It was from my underwear drawer.
My stomach dropped.
I couldn’t help myself—I opened the message thread. It was a group chat with his friends. He’d sent a photo of my underwear and joked that he “didn’t remember marrying a granny.” The replies were full of laughing emojis and crude comments.
I felt humiliated. Betrayed. Like the floor had disappeared under my feet.
The next morning, I met Tom’s mom, Joyce, for brunch. I tried to act normal, but she noticed immediately that something was wrong. After a little prodding, I told her everything.
She didn’t gasp. She didn’t look shocked.
Instead, a mischievous smile spread across her face.
“Leave it to me, dear,” she said calmly. “I know exactly what to do.”
That evening, Tom walked through the door and froze.
There stood Joyce in the living room, holding up a pair of her own floral cotton underwear, grinning proudly. I stood beside her, arms crossed, expression neutral.
“Oh, honey, welcome home!” Joyce said brightly. “I was just showing your wife what real ‘granny underwear’ looks like. Since you’re such an expert, I thought you’d enjoy the demonstration.”
Tom turned bright red. “Mom, what the hell?”
“Oh, come on,” Joyce continued, unfazed. “I just think it’s adorable how you boys giggle about women’s underwear like teenagers. I’m sure your father would find this story fascinating too.”
Tom shot me a desperate look. I raised an eyebrow and said nothing.
Then Joyce’s tone shifted.
“You embarrassed your wife in front of your friends,” she said firmly. “You made her feel small over something she has no reason to be ashamed of. And for what? A cheap laugh? I raised you better than that.”
Tom rubbed the back of his neck. “I… I wasn’t thinking. It was just a stupid joke.”
“Oh, of course,” I said coolly. “A joke. Just like this is a joke, right?” I gestured toward Joyce, who waved the underwear in the air.
After a long pause, Joyce laughed softly and folded the underwear. “Alright. Message received.”
She turned to Tom. “Now apologize to your wife.”
Tom looked at me, shame written all over his face. “I’m really sorry. I was a total jerk. I didn’t think about how it would make you feel.”
I let the silence stretch before answering.
“It’s not just about the joke,” I said. “I’ve been sacrificing so we can save money, and instead of appreciating that, you made me the punchline.”
He nodded. “You’re right. I do appreciate you. I messed up.”
Joyce clapped her hands. “Good. Then I think your punishment is obvious. You’re taking your wife on a shopping spree. New lingerie, makeup—whatever she wants. On your dime.”
Tom groaned but nodded. “Fair enough.”
The next day, he kept his promise. We went shopping, and for once, he didn’t complain about prices. I picked out beautiful lingerie, cozy pajamas, and a bottle of expensive perfume. Every time he winced at a price tag, I smiled.
That night, as I admired myself in the mirror, Tom wrapped his arms around my waist.
“You look incredible,” he said quietly. “I really was an idiot.”
I smiled. “A learning idiot.”
He laughed. “I swear, I’ll never make fun of your underwear again.”
And this time, I believed him.
Lesson learned: Respect in a relationship isn’t just about big gestures. It’s about the small moments, the private choices, and how we speak about the person we love—especially when they’re not in the room.
