As I waited for my brother’s response, I decided to dig deeper. I opened my laptop, searching for any emails that might shed light on the situation. My inbox was a mess of unread messages, but one caught my eye—a recent email from our family lawyer, subject line: “Trust Amendment Discussion.” I clicked it open, my heartbeat quickening.
The email was succinct, yet it hinted at a larger conversation. “Please review the attached documents regarding the recent amendment to the trust,” it read. “We recommend discussing any concerns with your mother.” The attachment mirrored the document I’d just been handed, confirming its authenticity.
At that moment, my phone buzzed. A message from my brother: “I had no idea. What did she say to you?” Relief washed over me, knowing that he was as much in the dark as I was. But it also meant that we were both on our own to figure this out.
I responded quickly, “She just said it’s business and left. I’m trying to make sense of it.” I attached a photo of the document, hoping he might see something I missed.
As I waited for his reply, I decided to call the lawyer directly. The phone rang twice before a familiar voice answered, “Jackson Law Office, how may I assist you?”
“Hi, this is Claire Matthews,” I said, trying to keep my voice steady. “I have a few questions about the trust amendment my mother mentioned. Can I speak to Mr. Jackson?”
“One moment, please,” the receptionist replied, the line clicking as she transferred my call.
