Instructions
Step 1: Brown the Meat and Sauté Aromatics
Heat oil in a large pan or Dutch oven over high heat.
Add stew meat, diced onion, and diced green bell pepper (if using).
Brown meat on all sides and cook until onion softens, about 5-7 minutes.
Step 2: Add Flavorings
Stir in tomato sauce (or fresh diced tomato), garlic powder (or minced garlic), cumin, salt, and black pepper.
Mix well to coat meat and vegetables.
Step 3: Thicken and Add Liquid
Sprinkle flour over the meat mixture, stirring to avoid lumps.
Pour in water or chicken stock and mix thoroughly to form a sauce.
Step 4: Simmer
Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to low.
Cover tightly and cook for 1½ hours or until meat is tender. The longer it simmers, the richer the flavor.
Step 5: Adjust Seasoning and Serve
Taste and adjust salt, pepper, or cumin if needed.
Serve hot with warm flour tortillas, fluffy rice, or creamy mashed potatoes.
Enjoy this comforting and flavorful stew — a true classic that brings back warm memories!
