My parents exchanged sorrowful glances, their expressions a mangled web of shame and regret. My mom responded, her voice betraying her, “We believed we were making the right decision for the family.” “We couldn’t sit on our hands while your brother suffered; he needed help.”
“Are you kidding me?” I became angry and snapped at them with poisonous remarks. “You choose to let his mistakes ruin my future? You have no right to put me through this.
I was overwhelmed by the depth of their betrayal; I felt helpless, lost, and alone; and tears welled up in my eyes. My aspirations, which had previously been radiant, had been shattered by my parents’ indifference and abandonment.
“And what about my aspirations?” I yelled out with all my might. Remember the life I had envisioned for myself? Were you even interested in that?
My parents looked embarrassed and said nothing. It was an incredibly harsh admission of guilt that showed how their priorities were all wrong and how much they despised my aspirations and ambitions. Please remember that I am the only female member of my family.
