1. In a large bowl, dissolve the sugar in the warm water, then sprinkle the yeast on top. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes, until the mixture is frothy.
2. Stir in the melted butter, salt, and egg into the yeast mixture.
3. Gradually add the flour, starting with 3 1/2 cups, mixing well after each addition. The dough should be soft but not sticky. Add more flour if necessary.
4. Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes, until smooth and elastic.
5. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
6. Punch down the dough and divide it into 12 equal pieces. Shape each piece into a ball and place in a greased baking dish or on a baking sheet.
7. Cover the rolls with the kitchen towel again and let them rise for another 30 minutes, or until doubled in size.
8. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
9. Bake the rolls for 15-20 minutes, or until golden brown.
10. If desired, brush the warm rolls with additional melted butter before serving.
Variations & Tips
For a richer flavor, swap out the water for milk. You can also add a tablespoon of honey for a touch of sweetness. Want to mix things up? Try adding some chopped herbs like rosemary or thyme to the dough. If you’re short on time, shape the dough into a loaf and bake it in a greased loaf pan instead of individual rolls.
