My Wife Handed Me a Statement and Said “Just Look at It”—Then Left the Room

The bank representative’s voice broke through the hold music, “Thank you for holding. How can I assist you today?”

“I’m looking to verify some charges from a vendor called Green Path Consulting,” I explained, keeping my tone even.

“Certainly, sir. Can you provide me with the dates and amounts?”

I read them out from the statement, my eyes flicking back to the door where my wife had disappeared. As the representative confirmed the charges as legitimate, I felt a knot tighten in my stomach. This was no clerical error.

“Is there anything else unusual about these transactions?” I asked, trying to keep my voice steady.

“I’m afraid I can’t disclose more details about the vendor,” the representative replied, “but I can note your concern on the account.”

Hanging up, I leaned back in my chair, staring at the statement. A hundred questions swirled in my mind, each one leading to another dead end. Who was Green Path Consulting? Why were they siphoning money from our account?

The answers weren’t in the numbers, not yet anyway. I needed to dig deeper, check our credit card statements, and cross-reference them with our budget app. But for now, I needed to talk to my wife.

Rising from the table, I walked down the hall, pausing outside the bedroom door. I knocked softly, waiting for a response.
