1. Activate your brain with challenges
The most effective way to keep your mind sharp is to not let it get bored.
“It’s not about watching easy movies or superficial problem-solving, but about serious work,” the professor explains.
People who solve difficult problems throughout their lives—scientists, researchers, creatives—often retain their mental clarity and precision of thought well into old age. Their brains are like marathon runners who never stop running.
Chernigovskaya recalls her teacher Lyudmila Verbitskaya, whose first sign of change was to stop wearing heels. “This is not a diagnosis, but a symbol: when a person who has worn heels all their life suddenly stops, it is a sign that you need to pay attention to changes,” the professor says.

He also remembers his grandmother, who lived for almost a century and could recite a long poem by Merezhkovsky by heart, which she learned at the age of ten – 90 years later, not a single verse has been forgotten. “Her brain worked like a Swiss watch,” Chernigovskaya points out.
Message: The brain needs to be “started” long before memory problems appear. Complex tasks, performed regularly and carefully, help maintain mental fitness.
2. The meaning of life feeds the brain
Chernigovskaya warns that even intense mental work is not enough without internal motivation:
“All attempts to activate the brain are useless if life has no meaning. Meaning does not appear with retirement – it must be built over decades.”
People who have learned since childhood to only “enjoy” food or shopping often feel empty in old age. The brain and body refuse to function without internal motivation – like a tree without roots that looks stable but dries up from the inside.
She also criticizes the excessive use of social media and pointless entertainment: “Watching stupid shows or reading superficial books is like pouring water into a broken bucket – there is effort, but no point.”
Tips: Find what motivates you. Make it something meaningful and alive to you, not necessarily something big. It’s important that it motivates your mind to get up and work every day.
