If you graduated school before the year 2000, there’s a good chance you took a home economics or home studies class—if you were a girl, that is. These classes taught essential skills for running a household, from cooking and sewing to budgeting and basic hygiene. Today, the idea of both women and men taking care of the home and family is widely accepted. Unfortunately, home economics classes are dying out, and fewer schools offer students—both girls and boys—the chance to learn these fundamental skills of adulthood.
