Televisions have been singled out by energy advisors as “one of the worst appliances to leave on standby.” Televisions can use up to 20 watts of energy in standby mode, an amount that adds up with continuous use. They advised: “If you turn your TV off completely when not in use, you could save around £30 a year on your energy bill.”
Satellite TV boxes, which are voracious energy consumers, also cost more when they are not completely turned off. Devices such as Sky or Virgin Media boxes were mentioned as using a “significant amount” of energy in standby mode. By shutting them down properly, around £20 could be cut from annual energy bills, they added.
Grandparents with grandchildren have also been warned about a third household appliance. Game consoles are identified as another “big culprit” in terms of standby power consumption.
Experts warn that some devices, whether XBOX or PlayStation consoles, can consume up to 45 watts of energy when left on standby. If your gaming console is not in use, it is recommended that you turn it off completely or unplug it from the mains. By taking this step, “you could save around £30 a year on your energy bill.”
