PREPARATION:
Preheat the oven : Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a large baking dish with butter.
Cook sausages : In a large skillet, cook sausages over medium heat until browned. Break into small pieces as they cook. Drain excess fat and set aside.
Prepare the potatoes : If using fresh potatoes, boil them until slightly tender, about 8 to 10 minutes. Drain and set aside. If using frozen hash browns, there is no need to precook them.
Mix ingredients : In a large bowl, combine cooked sausage, potatoes, chopped onion, shredded cheese, soup, sour cream and milk. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
Assembly : Pour the mixture into the prepared baking dish and spread it evenly.
Baking : Bake in the preheated oven for about 40 to 45 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and bubbly.
Garnish and serve : Once cooked, remove from oven and let sit for a few minutes. Garnish with chopped green onions before serving.
